Getting Stuffed: Scary Snake

I finally finished my first entry for the Six Weeks of Love for Softies competition!  I made a giant snake using another of Abby Glassenberg's patterns, the curvy version of the Squeaky Snake pattern from her Etsy shop.  I enlarged it to 200% so the snake would be big and scary-looking.  When I started the project, I had a grand scheme in mind that involved a balloon and pump to make it look like the snake had eaten a large animal, then digested it as the air gradually released.  Although the idea itself was successful, it was far less dramatic than I hoped.  Even so, the snake is still pretty cool.  I made the top of the snake out of a tie-dye print knit fabric (to stretch when the balloon was pumped up, you see).  The bottom is a dark orange cotton.  And the eyes, which are different from the pattern, are made from a wool felt ball and black felt for the pupils.  Can you tell I fussy-cut the head piece?  I even planned out where I wanted the print to be at the base of the head so there wouldn't be an awkward break in the pattern.

Of course, I couldn't resist making it look like he was devouring a poor defenseless teddy bear.  Don't worry, it just looks like it because of the camera angles.  No bears were harmed during this photo shoot.

The cool thing about using a knit fabric for the top is that the snake was more pretty bendable.  During the photo shoot, I was able to curve him around plants and rocks, and he looks completely natural.

And, just because I'm always overzealous with my picture-taking, here is one last gallery of shots of my super-scary, bear-eating, tie-dyed knit snake.

Hehe. Thanks. I was going for scary, but with a silly twist (hence the tie dye fabric).

What great fabric for a snake, love those sticking out eyes too! And I've just seen your Red Riding Hood Doll and she is beautiful, there must have been some very stiff opposition in the Sew Mama Sew competition for you not to win :( But at least you have 2 gorgeous toys to keep.

Adding a throat so he could actually eat other plush toys would be fun. :)
Some years ago I saw a big scary snake plush, about 12 feet long! Had angry eyes and a mouth that opened with lots of teeth. It was able to "eat" kids! :)
